UI International Writing Program hosts first official delegation of writers from Vietnam

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa International Writing Program (IWP) will host the first official delegation of Vietnamese writers to visit the United States in the post-Vietnam War era. The group of 13 writers, guests of the U.S. State Department, will participate in a series of educational, cultural and social activities March 4-9 at the UI and in the surrounding region.

The delegation will also be hosted by the University of Massachusetts at Boston, the New School in New York City; and City College of San Francisco.

Christopher Merrill, director of the IWP, commented, “This is a historic opportunity for writers from our divided nations to meet and talk, to trade works and ideas, to forge friendships that may last a lifetime.”

Among the American sites and attractions that the delegation will visit are the historic homes of writers Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry David Thoreau; Harvard Square and a concert by the Boston Symphony; Greenwich Village, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, the Empire State Building, the Merchantile Library of New York, the New York Public Library, the United Nations headquarters, the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the ESPN Sports Zone in New York City; the Vietnam War Memorial, Charlottesville, Va. and Monticello in the D.C. area; and the University of California-Berkeley, the Oakland Museum and other sites in the Bay Area.

The coordinator of the visit is the William Joiner Center for the Study of War and Social Consequences at UMass-Boston (http://omega.cc.umb.edu/~joiner/), through a grant from the foreign visitors program of the U.S. State Department.

The IWP is a one-of-a-kind group-residency program that brings established writers from around the world to the UI, where they become part of the lively literary community on campus and travel to present readings, symposia and lectures throughout the country. Over the years, nearly a thousand writers from 115 countries have completed residencies -- including individual Vietnamese writers each year since 1996, through State Department support.
