UI Faculty Awarded International Programs Research Awards

The 2003-2004 International Programs Major Research Projects awards have been presented to four University of Iowa faculty members. The awards, valued at $10,000 each, are provided to support individual and collaborative research projects, symposia, and conferences.

The following UI faculty members won the awards to support their projects:

	Enrique Carrasco, professor of law, will present a symposium on "Whither Goes Cuba? Prospects for Economic and Social Development." The symposium will focus on the future social and economic development of Cuba, especially as they relate to trade and investment with the U.S. Midwestern states.
	Kelly M. Kadera, assistant professor of political science, will host a two-day public symposium on the possibility of global peace. Entitled "A Global Democratic View," the symposium will invite international relations scholars to present their work on topics such as network analysis, implications of global democratic peace (or lack thereof) for American foreign policy, and the relationship between global democracy and crisis escalation.
	Teresa Mangum, associate professor of English, will participate in the annual conference of the Interdisciplinary 19th-Century Studies Association, which is meeting at UI in April 2004. She will present "Serious Pleasures," a showcase of university collections including European art and opera, photography, pre-cinematic technologies, and international theatre and music history.
	Burns Weston, director of the UI Center for Human Rights, will participate in a research colloquium on "Using the Human Rights Framework to Combat Abusive and Exploitative Child Labor." The colloquium is expected to generate fresh insights into a rights-based approach to this global outrage and will be used in the UI course "Child Labor and Human Rights."

International Programs consists of a number of offices, centers, academic programs, research projects and services. Organized under the associate provost for academic programs and the dean of International Programs, these units serve to further internationalize the campus and community and to promote global scholarship, research, and training.
